Periodontal disease & dental restorations

Periodontal disease is an infection commonly caused by the bacteria found in dental plaque. Your immune system fights this bacteria by instinctively releasing substances that simultaneously damage your gums, alveolar bone, and periodontal ligament. This can lead to gingivitis, which is the earliest stage of periodontal disease.

It’s imperative that you schedule an appointment with your dentist if you notice these symptoms:

  • Swollen gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Pain
  • Receding gums

Periodontal disease can be prevented by practicing good oral hygiene at home and visiting your dentist regularly. A consistent brushing and flossing schedule can remove a majority of the plaque that sticks to your teeth. However, only a professional cleaning can keep the plaque from spreading below the gum line and multiplying. If this plaque isn’t removed, your gums may swell and detach from your teeth.

Clinical studies have concluded that a patient with good oral hygiene should schedule a dental appointment once every 6 months to thwart plaque buildup and gingivitis. However, patients with a history of periodontitis should seek restorative services at least 4 times a year.

In certain cases, periodontal disease can also be caused by:

  • Intense stress
  • Poor diet
  • Genetics
  • Tobacco use

Fortunately, Luminous Smiles offers dental restorations to help patients fight and prevent periodontal disease. Restoration dentistry is also commonly referred to as “prosthodontic dentistry.” Quite simple, the goal of restoration dentistry is to preserve your oral health by replacing your missing teeth. When a tooth is lost to periodontitis, the open space is particularly vulnerable to bacteria buildup. This can lead to gingivitis and cavities in other areas of your mouth.

Luminous Smiles provides the following restoration dentistry procedures:

  • Dentures
  • Dental implants
  • Root canals
  • Sealants
