Oftentimes, parents do not realize the importance of teaching good oral hygiene habits to their children at an early age, especially if they have yet to lose any of their baby teeth. However, it is crucial to instill healthy brushing and flossing routines early on to ensure they continue them well into the future as adults.

Celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month this February and read up on these helpful tips:

  • Your children should brush their teeth for at least two minutes, two times a day, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). To keep it interesting for them, find fun ways to time them, such as an hourglass timer.
  • Help keep your kids on a regular brushing routine. An easy way to do this is by having them brush their teeth before heading off to school in the morning and again before going to bed in the evening.
  • Remember, flossing is important! Make sure they floss before brushing their teeth to protect the health of their gums. Gums are the foundation for a person’s teeth, so it is crucial that learn this at a young age.
  • Schedule a visit to the dentist for your children every six months to ensure they are getting regular check-ups and cleanings. Doing this at a young age can also help ease their anxieties about dental appointments and dispel some of the irrational fears children often feel about visiting the dentist.
  • Kids love sweets, so instead of denying them of these treats entirely, simply give them alternatives to sugary candies that are bad for their teeth and monitor how much candy they are allowed to consume.
  • If your kids seem a little bored with their brushing routine, consider picking out a musical toothbrush for them, or give them options of toothpaste to choose from.
  • For kids who have sensitive gums, consider giving them a few pieces of ice to chew on or a crunchy snack before it is time to brush their teeth. Additionally, an electric toothbrush can help with any sensory defensiveness your children have.
