Root Canal

Luminous Smiles Can Help You Preserve Your Natural Teeth

Many people are nervous when they hear they have to get a root canal, but this procedure has the potential to help you preserve your natural teeth through repairing the damaged nerve. As a conservative dental practice, here at Luminous Smiles, we work hard to help you maintain your natural teeth as long as possible, and one way we are able to do that is through root canal procedures. We also know that many people feel anxiety when going to the dentist. When you visit our office, you will always be greeted with a smile, and our friendly staff works hard to make you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible.

The Root Canal Procedure

If you have a tooth with badly infected roots, you may be a candidate for a root canal. When the pulp of your tooth becomes infected, you may feel pain and swelling, and if left untreated, you may wind up losing the tooth entirely. That’s why it is important to contact your dentist if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

Symptoms of an infected tooth include:

  • Severe pain, especially when chewing or when pressure is applied
  • Swelling of the gums
  • Discoloration of the tooth
  • Severe sensitivity to hot and cold that does not subside

If your dentist determines that a root canal is the best option for you, an appointment to remove the damaged and infected part of the root and pulp will be scheduled. You may also be instructed to take a series of antibiotics to prevent further infection.

During the procedure, you will receive a local anesthetic to ensure that you do not feel pain while the dentist works on your tooth, and the diseased portion of your tooth pulp will be removed. Your dentist will then address and treat the infected area. Once this is complete, your tooth will be sealed, and your dentist will fit you for a crown, restoring the function and appearance of your tooth.

What Happens Next?

After a root canal procedure, you may experience some discomfort and sensitivity for several days. However, you will be able to return to your normal routines immediately, including brushing and flossing. At Luminous Smiles, we believe in working with patients to help them establish good oral hygiene practices, and after your root canal, our dentist can answer any questions you have about your oral health and can set you up on a twice-yearly checkup and cleaning schedule.

Our Newport Beach dentist accepts most insurance, PPO, and indemnity plans. We also only use the best materials, and our modern sterilization system surpasses OSHA regulations. We are a member of the Orange County Dental Society, the California Dental Association, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. With extensive experience performing root canal procedures, we can help you feel at ease and supported as you get your oral health back on track.
